Our 8 Causes of Reading Difficulty CPD course for teachers

The 8 Main Causes of Reading Difficulty
A CPD Course for Teachers

Who is it for?

This is a course that will suit anyone involved in delivering interventions for struggling readers aged 6-12. That includes special needs specialists, heads of literacy, teachers in grades/years 2 and 3, teaching assistants and head teachers

What will I learn?

The content to the course is highly practical. You will work through a series of case studies, with the patterns of typical struggling readers described and explored. The causes of difficulty for each case study will be explained and fitted to the patterns or symptoms of their difficulty. And a simple solution to apply will be presented and discussed.

An Example

A typical case study is the bright, visual child that is great at drawing, great at mathematics and is a good chatter, but cannot read. And the child’s spelling is okay in spelling tests, but terrible in their free writing.

When this child reads to you, there are various baffling patterns:

  • The child reads a word on one page, but is unable to on the next page.
  • The child struggles with short, familiar words, but then reads a long word fine.
  • Generally there is a lot of guessing, rather than decoding words, despite years of phonics

So what is going on? Why are you seeing those patterns? And what can you do to help the child get back on track?

Format to the training

The training has two parts to it:

  1. Initial twilight training session, 3.30pm to 6pm, held at a school in your region. This will involve a run-through of eight case studies, to explore the patterns of each, what causes them and what you can do to help.
  2. 4 hours of online video training to consolidate what you have learned.

Outcomes for you

Here is what you will gain from attending:

  1. Deeper knowledge of the causes of reading difficulty
  2. Strategies to use in the classroom to help children progress
  3. A certificate of professional development
  4. Access to further resources that can be tested in the classroom
  5. The option to train as a paid trainer

Reading impairment has historically been one of the most frustrating issues in the classroom. This class will allow you to begin to get on top of it in your classroom.

Cost

The training plus consolidation video training costs £150 +VAT.

For just a further £75 you can train as a trainer and build a stream of income from this knowledge.
