Easyread parents will know that we are very big on praise.
One of the Golden Rules of Easyread is the “Rule of 5:1”. The rule says that for every 1 correction or criticism you make when reading with a struggling learner, you must praise 5 things they’ve done well. It becomes a habit within a few days, and can work wonders for both the child’s confidence and actual ability.
A recent article on parenting has explored scientist Carol Dweck’s research into motivation. She divides praise into two categories:
- having a fixed mindset
- having a growth mindset
A fixed mindset motivating statement might be telling your child, “well done for reading that word, you’re so bright!”.
A growth mindset motivating statement might be telling your child, “you worked so hard to read that word and you did it! Well done!”.
Dweck studied children over a period of 5 years to gauge the effects of the two different kinds of praise. To read about the results, check out the full article here:
