I realised that short success stories were more important
When Karl started Easyread, his mum Jennifer told us he was considered to be behind his peers in English reading at his Spanish immersion school. Karl is a highly visual-spatial learner, and compensated for his decoding difficulties by guessing short words when reading, which appeared to resemble words he had come across in texts before. So much time and energy was spent on retrieving words from his memory, that Karl’s reading comprehension was suffering. Reading was a stressful time for the whole family.
Now, Karl is independently reading each night and getting 10/10 on his spelling tests in school! Read the full case study on Karl’s Easyread journey below.
What was reading like for your son before Easyread? Main concerns/reading age level/frustrations etc?
Reading with my son was very frustrating. Although we read together since he was a baby, his reading level was at least about a year behind his classmates.
How was Easyread a good fit? What were the highs and lows of the Easyread experience for you?
Easyread helped me relax by teaching me that short success stories were more important than getting through the same material his class worked on.
What was the direct result of going through the process for Karl, in terms of reading and spelling improvement, confidence gains, etc.? What has that meant for you?
My son instantly became more confident and I was less frustrated. By focusing on what was done well with the lessons each night he started reading more words on his own. He is still a little behind his classmates, but he reads books on his own for about 15-20 minutes each night much more fluently and comfortable.
When he sounds things out, he does so very logically. Karl is great at spelling and usually gets 10/10’s each week.
And here is a topical photo of Karl with a carved pumpkin!
For our feedback…
For our feedback we couldn’t be happier with the program. James loves to do it every day and it is amazing how quickly he reads by looking at the characters alone without the letters, he leaves my daughter and I in his wake. James feels very empowered and loves to decode all the time. He tells me that he sees pictures above the words at school even though they are not there. I know I shouldn’t see improvement until 90 lessons but the confidence is there which we can’t help getting excited about. Thank you for helping my gorgeous boy.

Hi this is Erica…
Hi this is Erica and i just want to say that at school i am a freereader and i am very happy about that and i have been waning to be one for years.
50 lessons in and confidence is growing
Just thought I would let you know R and I read his school reader tonight which we haven’t done for ages as I felt it would have been too much together with his daily Easyread.
His reading and fluency have improved so much! It was a book probably aimed at the year below but there is no way he would have been so confident before doing Easyread. So thanks.
We've already noticed a difference in Rory's reading at home (lesson 63)
We’ve already noticed a difference in Rory’s reading at home which is fantastic since we’re not as far along as 90 lessons [currently at lesson 63]. He picked up his first book for pleasure at the weekend and, although his reading still isn’t fluent and he’s reading out (very) loud, he definitely enjoyed it. He’s now picking up easy reader books most days and is beginning to enjoy reading as well as being read to. This is a massive improvement for Rory and we look forward to the day that he reaches reading take-off and he can enjoy books like we do.
This does seem too good to be true…
I wanted to comment quickly on Joshua’s progress. This does seem too good to be true, but Josh seems to be doing much better when reading. He’s not done by any means (currently on lesson 70 – Ed), but he has more confidence and is excited about reading. He finishing small books in minutes that would have taken 5 times as long to finish, not to mention many tears and much frustration.
I am trying to stay cautiously optimistic, because we’re in this fight with Joshua for the long haul. I don’t want to let my guard down, but it seems like this program (and more importantly, what it’s taught me about having patience, building confidence, discouraging guessing, and not over studying) is going to succeed.
Thanks for all you do and please continue to stay diligent and keep us on track to achieving the reading success for Joshua in the most efficient and lasting way possible.

An Easyread mum is loving the latest version of the programme
Just started the new version. Loving the new look! Has just got that much harder, which is also a good thing – good to be slowly pushed along. So far the format of short sessions works SO well. We tried the reading after school sessions and 1.5 hours once a week just ended up being miserable! It’s great getting the little prizes in the post too and the constant positive messages are really good. They also help me stay positive (which sounds silly, but it’s sadly very easy to get uptight, but the lessons are always fun and we always have a laugh).
“A” has even started reading his Dr Who magazines more thoroughly, so fingers crossed some love of reading will eventually happen 🙂 Thanks
Easyread graduate Connor goes to college
Back in 2008, Connor and his mum, Hilary, joined Easyread to help 10 year-old Connor work through his reading struggles. Connor was having a hard time with decoding words out loud, and was a stickler for having a good guess at a word or two…
Over the course of 11 months, Connor’s confidence started to grow. He enjoyed the “shortness of the lessons” and he “really looked forward to the prizes”.
Today, Connor gets ready to begin college where he will be studying a BTec Sport diploma to pursue his quest to become a personal trainer, after having received 7 Cs and 2 Ds in his GCSEs.
The team at Easyread would like to wish Connor a huge congratulations and the best of luck in his future studies!

Hannah (8) has been writing a book series!
Hannah has been writing a book series in the last 3 weeks and is onto book 3 today. Each book is around 30-40 pages long!
She is reading many texts fluently and would like to thank you for all of the help in getting her literacy back on track.
I would readily recommend your program to others like Hannah and have done so already, many times.
We will await the delivery of the helicopter in excited anticipation…!
I did want to let you know that…
I did want to let you know that Easyread was a big help for Angelina, just as it was for her sister. On the other online program we did for schooling there were lessons that timed her reading speed. When she started, she would be at 6-9 words per minute. Since doing easyread, she was up to 61 wpm… much closer to the goal of 90 set for her grade level.
Thanks again,
A
I just wanted to say…
I just wanted to say, we are very happy with Easyread so far. Niccolo really loves it–he had a fever today but still wanted to do his lesson! He is also reading books on his own every day now without me asking him to, and I’m sure that is because of easyread. His confidence definitely has improved. He is also definitely guessing less than he used to, but hasn’t quite dropped that habit completely.
Thanks for all your support!

Ryan would get very frustrated…
1) Ryan would get very frustrated and not even try when asked to read. He had no confidence at all. He avoided reading completely. Homework was a real struggle.
2) Easyread was a good fit for him because he it was fun and he got immediate verbal praise (as well as prizes in the mail). His confidence built up right away and he became proud of himself.
3) I am so happy for him. He does his homework without a fight and even grabs books and wants to read on his own! He is very confident now in and out of school. He has become a good speller too.

Finding the cause of reading struggles can make all the difference
When we started the reading today and it was a white screen with black letters Ryan immediately said he couldn’t see the words. He started to squint and to get closer to the screen to see. I asked him if he wanted me to change the background color as soon as I changed it to grey he was able to read the story.
When we finished today I pulled out several different books and had him try to move his finger along the words in the proper order. He immediately started to rub his eyes and said he couldn’t see the words and it made his eyes hurt which made his brain hurt. I had a blue overlay that I put over the words and he was able to not only follow the words on the page but he was also able to pick out words on the page. We tried this with several books with the same results each time.
I must tell you how awesome this is! In the past he would have gotten frustrated and then gotten mad and said he would never be able to read, there would have been tears. For the first time he was able to communicate to me what the issue was and to ask me to correct it before frustration set in. He went through the books and overlays with me in front of his big brother which in the past would have caused him to be very angry as his brother is a good reader. When his brother asked him why he he was trying the overlays he told him the black words on the white page hurts my head but if I do it with the blue I can see the words and read them! His confidence and belief in himself and his ability to do this has soared! Thank you so much for the work and time you have put in to this program. It is so awesome to see Ryan finally believing in himself!
Thank you!

Coloured overlays help readers with contrast sensitivity
Already seeing a change at lesson 40
A sat a STAR test at school yesterday (tests reading, vocabulary and comprehension). The test is out of 9, 5 is the average and at the start of the year he got 3. In yesterday’s test (which is for the next grade up, for some reason) he got a 5! The teacher was so excited she sent us an email at home!
Thought I’d pass on the positive news 🙂
This program has made a WORLD of difference
This program has made a world of difference in [D’s] reading! He has transitioned from such a painfully struggling reader to a confident and fairly accurate reader. He still struggles with spelling and writing, but now we have a foundation on which to continue building. I thought the Spell race was helpful, especially when he was spelling phrases. The writing lab seemed to reinforce his common mistakes. Thank you so much for your help!
He has basically improved an entire grade level in his reading in just 4 months!
I have noticed this summer that A is really picking up on his reading and I can tell he is pretty proud of himself. He has basically improved an entire grade level in his reading in just 4 months. He is home-schooled this year in addition to 8 hours per week of a private tutor.
His tutor shared with me today that while reading a particularly challenging book, he was very impressed with how A broke the word down and sounded out each individual part of the word until he mastered it. This tutor is not familiar with the Easy Read program but he said he had never seen a child work so hard to break down a word. I just wanted you guys to know this and that we are extremely happy with his progress so far!
Amazing Naplan Results
I will also let you know that Sophie has received her Naplan results – which are very controversial in Australia – but we are very, very happy with her results. She has achieved above both the school and national average for her age in reading, persuasive writing and numeracy. She is way below on spelling and grammar, but we are slowly working on those areas as well so hopefully we can help her with those. It is great to see that the efforts she and her support team (Mum, Dad, Brother, Tutor and teachers) have made are paying off for her.
Thanks for a great program !
One happy mum.
I LOVE this program!
I have been very impressed with the set up of the easy read program. I like that it is repetitious and routine. My son always knows what to expect, which is important for him. Everything is going well!
I LOVE this program!
Easyread is a great program
J has finished his program. It has helped him a great deal. His reading has improved as well as the speed.
Thank you to everyone for the help. Easyread is a great program.
He's more confident, he's happier and is more willing to read
We have found [Easyread] absolutely amazing. The difference in F’s reading is unbelievable. He’s more confident, he’s happier and is more willing to read. He’s even been known to pick up a book and read it without being asked, simply because he wants to. I can’t believe the difference that Easyread has made. I can’t thank you enough.
William Read Two Books in Two Days
William has just finished Easyread. His reading has definitely improved and just yesterday he took himself to the school library at lunchtime and started reading a Zac Power book by himself. He finished it last night at home and read another one today. I am really hoping that he just takes off and reads more books from here.
We managed to do a lesson almost every day over the past 6 months – there was some reluctance at times but he enjoyed most of it and the odd bribe of sweets helped at other times. He is often reading the easy read characters faster than I am now, and his decoding ability is so much better.
I think it has definitely helped him – he did start aged 8 and a half years and was able to read at school but was progressing slowly and was very reluctant to read. He is still aware that he doesn’t read as well as a number of boys in his class but he is now much happier to get on with his school homework reading. There has also been a definite improvement in the fluency and speed of his reading over the past 6 months. His spelling is improved and his teacher says he is writing more and faster in class too.
Thank you for your help
Your company has such exemplary customer service & genuine care
D has enjoyed the lessons much more [since switching to the easier reads] and has commented on how short and easy they are:-)
I can’t thank you enough for your suggestions and help. Also, thank you for following up with us; your company has such exemplary customer service and genuine care.

Mummy, I’m going to do Easyread with my kids
F and I are getting very excited that we have less than a week of lessons left! We can’t thank you enough for your help and support along the way. The progress in F’s reading and enthusiasm is a pleasure to see. Just tonight he said “Mummy, I’m going to do Easyread with my kids. It’s helped me so much” We’re no longer crying over reading, neither of us are frustrated and we have enjoyed the whole process. The tears, the tantrums (and they were just mine) every time we picked up a book are a thing of the past. Thank you for making the whole process so much fun.
Getting the results I hoped for
I just wanted to say that M is coming along really well. She is happier now to do the lessons and I can see a great improvement in her reading. She’s trying to decode when faced with an unknown word and after the eye tracking sessions it’s also much easier for her to see the text. So thankyou, I feel that we’re getting the results that I hoped for and plan to continue on with the program.
