Parent Reviews of Easyread

Our most recent reviews:

We can already see a huge improvement…

Just wanted to say that we can already see a huge improvement in Holly’s reading. She now actively looks out books and is keen to have a go, even with quite difficult text. She is much more confident with school books and books at home – although I can tell that she sometimes does guess words when she is tired. She completely loves her Easyread characters and we use them for other books to help her through difficult words. She loves the lessons. To start with she found just having the Easyread characters difficult – its clear she likes to use them as an aid rather than on their own.

I thought this would never happen…

Hi David,

I am getting on very well. I really like Easyread and the lessons. I can read very well now and I get the same reading book as my class. I thought I would never get that. I liked it when you spoke to me. Thank you for helping me so much.

I didn’t like mushroom picker at the beginning but now I like it. And my spelling has got very good as well. I got 22/25 in this weeks test and that is amazing for me.
I hope to meet you one day.

The decoding has begun transferring to her school reading…long may this continue!…

We have found the Easyread process easy to set up and maintain. Catherine loves feeling in control with the page options when she is reading. We make sure she re-reads the lines until she is fluent with the words and the page with only the Trainertext.

Recently she has turned the story bit into a kind of ‘story time’ for her younger sister, who has been eager to see what her big sister is doing! It has also generated questions about the meaning of the story and the use of certain unusual words.

The continual decoding has begun transferring to her school reading scheme as well. When she is at home with us she has started to read a chapter book, The Owl who is afraid of the Dark, doing every other sentence.

This scheme has certainly given Catherine the confidence to have a go, and the funky monkey games are a definite favourite! Long may this continue.

We were so proud of him!…

Blake is doing really well with the reading. He might make a few mistakes, but usually just with long words. In the last 4 months his handwriting has really improved and so has his spelling.

The other night I came home from work late and he had secretly written me a note. He had pretended it was from his teacher and that he had been given a detention. I was pleased that he had wanted to write something by himself when he hadn’t been asked and it was a funny joke (he does have a good sense of humour!)

His teacher is really happy with his progress especially with reading, writing and spelling. In fact he was the only child in his school (which has 380 students in total) to be awarded a special persistence award. We were so proud of him!

Case Study: Highly intelligent, poor reading and spelling…

Lyn can remember how when her son was at nursery, he was observed as being one of the most promising children in his class. Indeed, Andrew was progressing incredibly well in all areas and staff often commented on how bright he was. Then, he went to school….

From age 5 onwards Andrew’s difficulties with his reading were woefully apparent. All Lyn could do was to hope that the school would guide him home.

But by the end of the next year, Andrew had not reached any of the required target levels.  During Year 1 (Kindergarten) his reading and writing skills were almost non-existent and so by Year 2 (1st Grade), Lyn decided to question the school about his reading and writing abilities, to which the Teacher replied: “well Andrew struggles with everything, doesn’t he?”

Lyn promptly took Andrew out of the school and opted for a year of homeschooling. They hired a tutor who assured Lyn that her son was very bright and would catch up. He didn’t.

In Year 3 (2nd Grade) Andrew joined a different school. Mother and son were determined to start afresh and hope for the best.  It was a good school and his reading did begin to improve, to an extent. But on the whole Andrew was still well below the average reading level for his age.

Three years went by and then Andrew sat the ‘Kent’ Test.  Despite having been above average in Maths, it was clear that without constant support from a Teaching Assistant he simply couldn’t read the questions. As such he failed the Maths portion of the test. It was then that Lyn became painfully aware that something needed to be done.

She began trawling the Internet for solutions and realized that although there was a wealth of information out there, much of it was suggesting she use the same techniques that had failed Andrew already.

Along the way she came across the Easyread System. It seemed different. So she had Andrew try the sample lesson and instantly, Lyn felt reassured. She could really see how it might work. So they took the plunge and signed up.

Andrew did the 5-15 minute lessons nearly every morning; the only exceptions being Christmas day and his birthday.  He never once complained and he loved receiving the prizes along the way. After about 3 months a marked difference in his reading was beginning to shine through. Even Andrew’s spelling and writing began to improve!

By the end of primary school, Andrew was halfway through the Easyread course and received a report from the school remarking on a “noticeable improvement in reading”. In his SATs he obtained a Level 4 in both reading and writing-the benchmark for a child who is showing constant progression in literacy.

That’s not all. A few months later Andrew started senior school (middle school). For the first time in his life he took a Maths assessment without the help of an assistant and obtained a Level 5! “We were thrilled. This would not have happened without Easyread.” Said Lyn “It certainly worked for Andrew! “

So happy…

Rafferty is doing well and we are so pleased. In the last week he has started voluntarily reading everything he can see (he NEVER did that before) and is now reading posters and stickers and even books to his little sister with no prompting at all. So happy!

Finally…something positive…

So far so good with my son’s reading. He is enjoying the lessons and seems to be reading the story reasonably well. I have noticed he is attempting to read words around him – on packets, signs, etc., which he didn’t do before.

For me, Easyread is great because it feels like there is finally something positive I can do with him. He has had a lot of challenges including moving from a completely non-English speaking school last year, along with 3 open heart surgeries which have needed lengthy anaesthetics, and therefore may well have affected his memory.

For a long time I was quite despairing that he would EVER learn to read but now I do feel more hopeful.

A very happy boy…

To sum up, I would say that Agent Lachlan is a very happy boy right now. He enjoys doing his “Secret Agent’ work and his use of the decoding is very good. I wouldn’t say that his reading is smoothly fluent yet but, in my opinion, he is more fluent with Easyread than he has ever been with his school reading books.

P.S. The British Government does not need to worry because when Daniel Craig is ready for retirement, agent 007.5 will be ready to take over!!

You guys are helping Jack hugely…

We remain v happy with Dr David and did a wonderful lesson this morning…you guys are helping Jack hugely and the lessons are FUN too…so helpful when encouraging a 6 year old to study!

Warm wishes on a sunny day.

I am really proud of myself…

Dear David,

I am really proud of myself so are my mum and dad!

I have enjoyed Easyread and thank you for helping me. Everything I do at school is now much better-reading, spelling and my handwriting. I am very pleased that I can do it now.

THANK YOU!

– Nathaniel (8 years old)

A real confidence boost…

The main difference I have noted with Awena is her belief that with work, she will be able to read as well as other children in her class. Before starting Easyread she seemed to think that she would be able to find her way through education without reading, and that she would probably always do poorly.

Overall she is enjoying the Easyread sessions, and I am pleased that the lessons have stayed at a similar level of difficulty for a significant period of time so that Awena now thinks that the lessons are ‘easy’ which has provided her with a real confidence boost. Reading that’s easy?!

– B

Improved dramatically…

Angus’ confidence has improved dramatically since starting Easyread. He had reached the point where by he would not read out loud to anybody. This has already improved at home and at school.

– D (after 6 weeks on the course)

We are all HAPPY…

I am so pleased with Koutaro’s progress and most importantly he enjoys the lessons very much. The teacher at the school has also noticed his progress and we are all HAPPY!

With regards and a big thank you.

School has reported seeing a difference…

Hello Easy Read folks,

Seren is still very much enjoying the system. School has reported seeing a difference in her reading after just 6 weeks. They have also reported that she does not sight read now, but decodes. Another step forward is that she has started writing riddles on her own, and for her own pleasure. Of course the letter reversal is still there, but writing anything without help is a new development! So long as she starts to have the confidence to write, I know we can work on such things in the future.

I would happily recommend Easyread to anyone who is struggling…

Richard has thoroughly enjoyed Easyread. It has helped his reading immensely and he is now a lot less embarrassed about reading aloud in class. I am going to continue with the level 5 lessons until he is more fluent as he is still struggling with very big words. Thank you again and I would happily recommend Easyread to anyone who is struggling to read.

Reading is no longer the battle it used to be…

Everything going very well and Oliver still very motivated with Easyread. I feel he is decoding well and is using a combination of letters and pictures. I don’t believe he is guessing words any more either. There has been a noticeable change in Oliver’s attitude to reading and it is no longer the battle it used to be, so thank you.

Before Easyread every night I would shout at my mum…

I can’t tell you how much Easyread has helped me. Before Easyread every night I would shout at my mum and she would shout at me but now we don’t because Easyread has helped me to read because I can decode better.

– Caitlin (age 7)

A sneaky reader

It’s great that Emma has reached the last few days of the Easyread programme – she has really enjoyed the lessons.

Over the months we have seen her reading improve and she now has a love of reading which she didn’t before – so much so we now have to make sure she isn’t sneakily reading her books well past her bedtime!

– J (Emma, 10)

For the first time…

I don’t know if I mentioned it before, but Sarathi read a book for pleasure for the first time in his life two nights ago. It was his own idea, and not prompted by me. He did the same last night. He was reading Horrid Henry on his Kindle.

– P (Sarathi, 8 years old, after only 19 lessons on Easyread)

I have nothing bad to say about Easyread!…

I have nothing bad to say about Easyread! Six weeks in and Harry still loves the lessons and it is now part of the routine each morning- 7 days a week. He has never complained or asked to ‘do it later’ so well done!

Your support has been fantastic and probably one of the main things I, as a mum really love about Easyread. From having to try and help Harry with reading, phonics, confidence building every day it seems like someone else is doing all the hard work! When Harry has found a lesson a problem I have sent an email and received an almost instant reply to tell me how to deal with the situation or just that the behaviour is normal! The emails to Harry have been a great confidence booster- being told he is doing so well and that things are hard but don’t give up mean so much more to him coming from you guys rather than us!!

Harry is now much faster at reading the text and is re-reading each first page after decoding until it is fluent. He is now quick at it and often says that there is not so much to read any more!!

His confidence is growing and we do see him trying to decode words on signs or in shops AND chapter books have been added to his Christmas list!!! A very exciting 6 weeks in our household! Thank you to everyone who has an input with Easyread- well done!

We are really enjoying the course…

Rafferty is continuing to enjoy the lessons on Easyread, he loves the games and is also enjoying reading the story. He does find it easier with the highlighter on so we are continuing to do the eye tracker exercises which you recommended.

Also – when we do his reading homework from school (which is obviously a normal book without the Easyread characters) and he gets stuck, I say something like ‘if this was Easyread that would have an Ape over it’ to help and it works perfectly.

Overall – we are really enjoying the course, thank you!

"…she is expressing joy in reading…"

I want to thank you guys so very much for this program and your support.  Cassidy’s reading, independent of her easyread lessons, has improved greatly.  Her attitude about reading has completely changed and she is expressing joy in reading every sign in town.  Last week she was having a hard time falling asleep and so was allowed to look at books until her eyes got tired.  I heard her reading a book more fluently than ever before.  But, more importantly, she was enjoying it.  I can’t tell you how I appreciate you guys.

I am so incredibly pleased with Max's progress on Easyread…big smiles all round!…

I am so incredibly pleased with Max’s progress on the Easyread System.

In only the 2 months that we have been doing Easyread, Max has gone from being an extremely reluctant reader to a willing and confident reader, who takes his time more and will decode words rather than use guesswork, which was a huge issue originally.

Doing Easyread has definitely become a routine for us. Although of course there are the very occasional days that he is reluctant, he knows that it is helping him and he knows that it will help him hugely in the future. Max always decodes the story and then repeats each sentence so it sounds fluent.

Max has progressed up 3 reading levels at school since starting Easyread – this has only been 2 months and 6 weeks of that was the summer holidays! Max even came home from school last week full of smiles and told me ‘mum I am feeling so much better with my reading, thank you for paying for me to do Easyread’. This was so good to hear and has clearly instilled a great deal of confidence in Max too so big smiles all around!

Thank you Easyread.

This programme seems to be what was needed…

I heard Seren trying to read a book to herself for the first time ever yesterday. She was sounding the words out to herself. She has always loved books, but has never tried to read them. She has also moved up in reading at school. I am surprised at how fast her confidence and reading ability have improved.
This programme seems to be what was needed to tip her over to being in a position to benefit from all the additional help that has been provided for her at school.
The fact that she was prepared to have a go at reading without any assistance means that her confidence has increased. Now she will be in a position to really take advantage of learning opportunities more easily.
